The Sanskrit
Department at Edinburgh is unique in Scotland
(and one of only four in Britain). Its two
members of staff teach a wide range of topics
in the field of Indology from pure language
study to religion.
Their research publications also
reflect this wide coverage, with both having
published books and numerous articles on
literature and religion. The size of the
department ensures informality and the bulk
of classes are treated as tutorials.
Courses
taught include Sanskrit, Indian Civilisation,
Indian Religion and Philosophy, Hinduism
and Buddhism.
Sanskrit
can be studied at Edinburgh either as a
full MA Honours degree or a joint MA Honours
degree with Greek, Latin or Linguistics.
In addition, both Sanskrit and the two general
courses offered by the department (Indian
Civilisation 1 and Indian Religion and Philosophy
2) can be included in curricula for the
MA General degree, while courses are alo
provided in Hinduism and Buddhism at Honours
level for the Religious Studies degree.
Pali and Prakrit are taught in third and
fourth year as components of the single
Sanskrit honours degree.
